2024: Lessons, Growth, and Everything In Between

Hi everyone!

As 2024 draws to a close, I’m taking a moment for my annual tradition: reflecting on the roller-coaster journey that this year has been. It’s been a year of transformation, filled with lessons, challenges, and growth. I want to share some insights that I believe might resonate with you as we step into the new year.

So, without further ado, here are the lessons 2024 has taught me — insights that I hope will inspire or offer you a fresh perspective as we move forward.

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL

There are two categories in life: things I can control and everything else that’s beyond my reach. It’s natural to feel anxious about the future, wondering if our plans will fall into place or if things will go awry. There were nights when I’d lie awake, staring at the ceiling, feeling a sense of unease. But after some deep reflection, I realized that I had been consuming my thoughts with things I couldn’t control. This was not only futile — it drained my energy. Over time, I’ve learned to focus on doing my best in areas I can influence and surrendering the outcome to the Almighty. This shift has brought me a sense of peace and calm. It’s a process, but once you embrace this “surrendered self,” you find a profound sense of joy. I’m now more relaxed, knowing that everything happens for a reason, and that everything unfolding is the best outcome from Allah. This perspective has helped ease my anxiety and insecurity, and given me a renewed sense of energy and positivity.

WE GROW APART

In my younger years, I believed that only romantic relationships could fade or grow distant. I was wrong. The strongest friendships can also grow apart. I used to think that disagreements or big life events caused these changes, but I’ve since realized that, as we age, life gets more complicated. Some friends get married, move away, or simply grow in different directions. While this shift can be tough to accept, I’ve come to understand that it’s part of adult life.

I’ve learned to embrace my own company, realizing that at the end of the day, the only constant companion I’ll always have is myself — my body, mind, and soul.

And that’s why it’s so important to keep them balanced.

YOUR THOUGHTS ARE THE STRONGEST MAGNET EVER EXISTED

When I was in high school, I read ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne. Back then, I didn’t fully grasp its message, but today, I see clearly the power of thoughts. They are truly magical! Have you ever had a random thought like, “I might trip and fall”? And then — surprise — you do! But the opposite is also true. When I start my day with positive thoughts, gratitude, and motivation, everything seems to flow effortlessly, and positivity follows me all day. That’s why I always start my morning with gratitude and a prayer, setting the tone for a powerful day ahead.

Yes, indeed my thoughts are my superpower.

BE SELECTIVE WITH YOUR CIRCLE

I’ve heard it said that we’re the average of the five people we spend the most time with. I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I’m being very selective about the people who I allow into my inner circle. I surround myself with those who inspire me, support my growth, and encourage success.

In today’s world, true friends who are genuinely supportive are rare, so if you’re lucky enough to have one, treasure them!

SPEND TIME WITH YOUR PARENTS (AND FAMILY)

I live in a different city from my parents, and for a while, I’d hesitate to visit them on weekends, craving alone time after a busy week. But as I get older, I realize just how precious my time with them is. I now make it a point to spend more time with my parents, traveling and creating memories while they’re still healthy and strong. These moments with family not only enrich my life, but they also give my parents the joy and motivation to stay healthy in their golden years.

EVERY RELATIONSHIP SHOULD BE RECIPROCAL

This principle applies to all relationships, not just romantic ones. If you find that your partner or even your closest friends don’t match the effort and energy you put into the relationship, it’s time to reassess. You deserve relationships that are mutually supportive and fulfilling. Once you let go of those that drain your energy, you’ll find yourself glowing in ways you never imagined.

Don’t fear losing people who don’t value you — when you release what no longer serves you, God will bring in those who align with your energy and respect you for who you are.

THIS WORLD IS FULL OF MAGIC

As a child, I grew up watching Disney movies where magic happened when you believed. I used to think it was just fantasy, but I’ve experienced moments this year that make me believe in magic. One such moment was unexpectedly reconnecting with a high school friend in Mecca after more than 10 years, a reunion that seemed nothing short of magical. I also met strangers from all over the world who helped me grow in ways I never expected. These people — some old friends, some new — became my support system, lifting me up when I needed it most. Sometimes, God’s plan is more magical than we can imagine.

I’ve always known this phrase from the Quran: “Kun fa ya Kun” (Be and it is). It reflects the power of God’s will. When Allah decrees something, it happens instantly, just by His command. This year, I’ve learned to trust in God’s plan, do my best, maintain a positive attitude, and let Him take care of the rest. What might seem impossible to us is, in fact, easy for Allah.

As we step into 2025, I believe the new year isn’t just a time for celebration, but also a chance to reflect, grow, and prepare for the challenges ahead. Nothing in life happens without purpose, and every experience is an opportunity to learn. Let go of grudges and pain — these burdens only slow down your journey. Accept, make peace, and move forward, ready to become the best version of yourself. It’s time to set sail into 2025.

I hope my reflections on 2024 inspire you as much as writing them has inspired me. Wishing you all happiness, health, and countless blessings in the new year!
